Happy Halloween

Folks, I know it's been a long time since I've posted, my apologies. Autumn is a spectacular season bringing about chilly air, cozy blankets, fuzzy sweaters, hearty soups, rustic leaf colors and hot apple cider. But it also ushers in my busy season front and center, so I've been a little overwhelmed with work, but also some other fun personal stuff too. More of which I'll be posting about soon... like the Bon Appetit Los Angeles Grub Crawl, calligraphy with local San Clemente artist Jenna Rainey and a few crafty projects to get me in the holiday spirit. Oh, and let's not forget that amazing World Series win by the Red Sox last night! But enough of that, it's Halloween! Here's a little something special to celebrate, an illustration from Chris Piascik, one of my favorite artists. You can purchase this great piece on a variety of items from an iPad case to a tote bag to a mug. Check out his Society6 store right here. Have a great Halloween all!

Old School Meets High Tech

You heard it here first my friends... the Sketch Stylus is definitely this years stocking stuffer, but it's no ordinary pencil. The pencil functions like a regular pencil, but the 'eraser' is actually a built-in-stylus for your touch screen devices like iPad and iPhone. Clever and sharp! It's available from Suck UK for a mere $8 bucks. As a lead lover, this is already on my wish list!

A Stand Up Bag

A good handy bag is hard to come by. But the abrAsus commuter bag is truly designed for your life's work and it's available from the new Evernote Market. I love the wide zip pocket pouch design and the fact it won't flop over when you put it down. Would love it even more if it came in black!

Incredible Tree Art

If you've never looked at the rings of a tree trunk, I highly recommend it. I find the rings of a tree wildly beautiful and they can tell a lifelong story about the tree itself. I stumbled upon the most incredible leather rugs on Cool Hunting recently by Lynchburg, VA artisans Moore & Giles called Tree Art. Each Tree Art rug is laid by hand to create unique pieces inspired by the organically occurring patterns found in the horizontal cross section of a tree trunk and they are exquisite. They are so beautiful they could even be hung as wall art. Not surprising however, Moore & Giles is dedicated to designing and developing the most innovative and luxurious natural leathers for the high-end hospitality, aviation and residential interior design industries, and they've been doing so since 1933. With an exquisite price to match, the Tree Art rug is definitely a lifelong investment no matter how you choose to display it.

Read more about the creation and design of the Tree rugs over at Cool Hunting.

Cozy Creepy Cupcakes

Johnny Cupcakes brought back a fan favorite from the dead for Halloween, the Dead-ssert shirt design. I'm into good looking skulls lately, so this makes my cool list. Get your t-shirt or sweatshirt over at Johnny Cupcakes and get a little cupcake creepy.

Word as Image

Ji Lee is a Creative Director for Facebook who's Word as Image project started nearly twenty years ago as an assignment in art school to explore letters beyond their dull, practical functionality. I loved these kinds of explorations in school and always find them fascinating to see how other designers interpret typography and what they come up with. Recently Lee published an ebook of the same project containing nearly 100 words. Not only are they thought provoking, but some are down right funny. He's continued some of the typographic comedy over on his Facebook page. Take a look, you'll be amused.

Lettering in Style

Will you just look at this amazing poster by Bernadette Pascua. I've never seen anything like it, the mix of fun lettering styles make this poster whimsical and sophisticated. Love it!
